OVERVIEWThe Three Level House frames the landscape, allowing for simple, tranquil habitation. The 1600 sqft structure is configured in three radial legs, each holding a different program. The base elevation between the three legs steps down to accommodate the 12° slope, allowing the building to negotiate a range of similar sites and constraints, such as old-growth vegetation, access to primary vehicular circulation, and relationships to surrounding cabins or structures.
The material palette for the cabin distills the essential components necessary. The framing and structure are made of LVL timber. The floor and siding are both made of cedar. Through the staining of cedar, the exterior takes on a subdued and sensitive quality in the landscape. The building is oriented on the site to provide the most accessible landscape views while minimizing solar heat gains. The legs of the building are oriented north, west, and southeast. The glazing at the end of each leg is set back in relationship to the orientation to provide shading, from 4’ on the north leg to 8’ on the southern leg. The large horizontal window that defines the interior space is oriented east towards the sunrise.
