OVERVIEWSling is a temporary pavilion with a bright, interactive canopy. It is designed to maximize the buildable volume and is 9 meters along each edge and 3 meters in height. Sling aims to have a minimal impact on the site with the slightest possible disturbance on the landscape. This is achieved by using 10 cm columns only in the corners and suspending a canopy from above.
The tiled canopy maximizes the potential of fibrous materials in tension while allowing natural light to the landscape below. The bright, colorful tiles activate the space, pulling people in from the street. Once confronted with the pavilion, the pavilion's dynamic, 'interactive' nature is made explicit.
The tiled surface, which begins as a continuous drape, is activated through the public's interaction. Users are invited to pull and push the cables at each corner, controlling the degree to which the draped surface can be lifted above. When in its draped state, the tiled surface partitions off the space, producing intimate moments of relaxation, escapism, and reflection. When the cables are stretched tightly, a large covered gathering area is revealed for discussions, socializing, and inclusion.
