OVERVIEWThe Chi-Osk is an innovative rethinking of the contemporary kiosk. The conventional kiosk has several architectural and programmatic limitations, which have not allowed this typology to adapt to specific environments. The Chi-Osk seeks to redefine the modern concept of a commercial kiosk by incorporating features and programs not typically found in such structures. One notable innovation is its ability to transform into a "shape-shifter," allowing the kiosk to function as a commercial hub during the summer and serve as a warming house for a local outdoor skating rink in the winter.
Sited along the Lakefront in Chicago, the conventional kiosk is up against one of the harshest environments in the US. Chicago boasts above-average annual wind speeds, extreme sub-zero temperatures, and powerful moving storms developing along the Great Plains and moving across the region. The inability of the conventional kiosk to adapt to Chicago's four-season climate has left many lake-side kiosks shuttered for most of the Fall, Winter, and Spring Months. The Chi-Osk reimagines the role of a kiosk in the context of Chicago.
